Maruti Suzuki S-Cross likely to Get A Petrol Engine Option

Country’s giant auto-maker, Maruti Suzuki is planning to offer a petrol engine option for its premium crossover, S-Cross. Maruti Suzuki is currently working on a 1.5-litre petrol engine which is likely to power the S-cross, the report says.

Considering the earlier reports, the S-Cross could get either a 1.4-litre K-series petrol engine or a 1.0-litre Booster Jet turbo petrol engine. The reports also suggested that the company’s recent launched compact SUV, Vitara Brezza was also supposed to benefit from either of the engine options. As there is no such confirmation yet on both the powertrains, the new findings suggest that company is actively working on a new petrol unit for its only crossover S-Cross.

Currently being offered with only diesel engine option, the new petrol unit may work as a twist in the S-Cross’s sales. It seems like the Maruti Suzuki’s step towards petrol engines has been triggered by NGT’s (National Green Tribunal) decision to ban diesel vehicle currently in Delhi. As it appears that Indian automobile market has no future for the diesel-powered cars, the manufacturers have started to shift from diesel to petrol engines. In recent, Tata Motors-owned JLR (Jaguar Land Rover) launched the petrol unit of Discovery Sport yesterday in the country

Coming back to the S-Cross’s petrol engine, if the reports are to be considered, the premium crossover is powered by an M15 1.5-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine with a displacement of 1490 cc which is tuned to deliver a maximum power output of 100 hp at 5900 rpm, while the peak torque of 133 Nm comes up at 4100 rpm. The transmission duty will be taken care of by a 5-Speed manual gearbox. A 4-Speed automatic transmission might also be offered later.

Having a look at the current S-Cross powertrain, It is powered by a 1.3-litre and a 1.6-litre diesel motor. The former is paired with a 5-Speed manual transmission and tuned to deliver 89 hp of maximum power and 200 Nm of peak torque. While the later is mated to a 6-Speed manual gearbox and churns out a maximum power and torque of 118 hp and 320 Nm respectively.

The S-Cross which comes with a price tag in the range of INR 8.03 to INR 12.03 Lakh (Ex-Showroom, Delhi), has managed to grow the sales in India after the company reduced its price. The premium car dealer Nexa has currently two models - S-Cross and Baleno. The company is also planning to launch the updated Baleno RS that was showcased at Delhi Auto Expo in February this year.
