Back In the 90s, when a Maruti 800 was a dream car of the people, the Bajaj Chetak was one of most popular, reliable and an affordable two-wheeler vehicle offering for a compact happy family. That time, the Chetak was not only a true Indian mover but also a practically social norm for the people. Well, actually people loved their scooter.
Bajaj Chetak had made its debut in India in 1972 and continue to retail till 2006. But now, after a long duration of around 10 years, the iconic scooter is suspected of hitting the two wheeler industry again in a modern yet retro avatar in near future. In Fact, the leaked patent images of the 2017 Bajaj Chetak has made us believe that the scooter is expected to arrive by the end of 2017 or in next year.
Aesthetically, having a simple workhorse image in the past, now the Chetak will roll out in a completely new design philosophy. From the images, it’s obvious that the scooter is pretty much inspired by the European essence in design, which gives its a new look, a perfect amalgamation of classic and modern style statement. On featuring, the front of the scooter is embellished with an oval shape headlamp which is accentuated by a chrome bezel, sharp and well-formed lines also there to give a hint of the original Chetak design. Other than this, it gets a comfortable seat, a hook incorporated into the same red tanned seat and an air scoop on either side of the body panel. However, the rear is not visible, although it is expected to be fitted with sport brushed aluminum grab rails and LED turn indicators and brakes light at the rear end.
Initially, when Bajaj Chetak introduced in the market, it was equipped with a 145cc two stroke engine which was updated by a four-stroke engine of the same displacement in 2002. The mill was capable of producing 7.6PS of power and 10.78Nm of torque at 3500 rpm. All the generated power has been transferred to the rear wheel via a left-hand 4-speed manual shifter. As expected, the all-new Chetak will be powered by a 125cc, 4-stroke air-cooled engine. However, the power and torque figures are not known. A 150cc variant of the scooter is also probable to launch in the future.
For cycle parts, we can witness the employment of a single-arm front suspension at the front and a mono-shock at the rear. Whereas, the braking will be done under the supervision of drum brakes at both ends. Disc brake option might be introduced later in time.
Here in India, the Bajaj Chetak will go against the premium scooters like the Vespa and Aprilia SR150. To know more about the pricing, specifications, and power output, we have to wait till Bajaj doesn’t reveal anything officially.
