BMW is aiming high about electrifying its upcoming future line up and stepping closer to its goal, the renowned German luxury auto giant has unveiled the powertrain details of the next model to be electrified - all new BMW 530e iPerformance plug-In hybrid. The new plug-In BMW 5-Series will join the existing BMW 3-series, the X5, and the 7-series.
The maker of this 530e claims a pure electric driving range of 50 kilometers and this ideal run enables its owners to commute to their workplace at free of cost without using a drop of petrol.
Powering a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol mill, the BMW 5-Series develops a mechanical power of 180 hp, while the engine is further mated to a 95 hp electric motor. Jointly, the total maximum power output measures 248 hp along with the peak torque 420 Nm of peak torque.
The outputs are enough to thrust the mid-sized plug-In sedan from 0 to 100 kmph in just 6 seconds (xDrive makes it in 5.8 seconds), says BMW. It has a top speed of The 2018 BMW 5-Series plug-In hybrid is offered with a standard 8-Speed automatic transmission, however, one can choose between rear-wheel drive and all wheel drive system.
The combined powertrain can drive the car over a total range of 650 kms for the each charge. A 9.2 kWh lithium-ion battery pack is fitted under the rear passenger seat and which is also solely responsible for driving the e-sedan over a small distance of around 50 kms on pure electric power.
The BMW 5-Series iPerformance gets different driving mode such as Auto eDrive, Max eDrive and battery control. The Auto eDrive mode enables the system to choose a powertrain accordingly to deliver the best fuel efficiency, using this mode the sedan can run up to a speed of 90 kmph in EV mode. While the Max eDrive mode further adds up the electric power, and allows the 530e to hit maximum speeds up to 140 kmph in EV run. The ‘battery control’ mode, on the other hand, allows the petrol motor to pump up the batteries and also power the 530e along side.
One of the major highlights on the 2018 BMW 5-Series is the wireless charging system which is built in collaboration with Daimler-Benz. This wireless system charged the one-third of the battery in 3.5 hours. The 2018 5-Series gets smarter with BMW Connected which allows the car to sense the two-foot square charging pad under the car while the driver is assisted by the dashboard-mounted display.
The carmaker also puts into consideration the safety of under-car lying animals, and for such situation, the system is smart enough to detect it automatically and switch off the system. However, the wireless charging is not on sale currently and it is likely to be costlier than the wall charging set up.
