Honda is planning to update the underhood mechanism of its largest selling sedan, the City to increase fuel efficiency. As of now, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz is the most fuel efficient car in the its segment, and Honda has also geared-up to give it a close challenge. The Japanese automaker is going to launch the City petrol variant with a new 6-Speed gearbox.
The company has already introduced the 6-Speed manual transmission to its i-VTEC petrol engine in Honda BR-V. And now this new gearbox is likely to come paired with the City’s 1.5-litre i-VTEC petrol engine also. This new 6-Speed manual transmission will provide better cruising ability to the vehicle and thus will improve the fuel economy.
The City will become the first in the segment to receive 6-Speed transmission, other cars in the segment like Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Hyundai Verna 4S, Volkswagen Vento and Skoda Rapid, all feature 5-Speed manual transmission mated to their respective petrol engines.

The City and the BR-V, both are powered by the same 1.5-litre i-VTEC petrol engine which develops a maximum power of 119 PS and a peak torque of 145 Nm. With this engine, the City returns fuel mileage (ARAI-certified) of 18 kmpl for automatic and 17.8 kmpl for manual transmission variant. After having paired with the new transmission box, the City’s petrol engine is expected to get a slight hike over the current mileage.
We can also expect some fresh changes to its bodywork, and some new features as well, as Honda has not changed its appearance since its launch in 2014. There is no certain news about the launch of new updated City with 6-Speed transmission however, it may hit the Indian market during the festive season this year.
