After long rumoured, the German luxury auto giant has confirmed that it will line up the much anticipated BMW 8-Series Coupe into production in 2018. Though, BMW is kind enough to share a silhouette teaser of the upcoming 8-Series car to give us a hint about what it will look like. The teaser image suggests it’s a low-slung, two-door coupe with an extended hood and wide haunches.
The new flagship model is a part of company’s broader strategy which aims at higher-margin sportscar rather than compact segment cars. The carmaker believes that 2018 8-Series will take the segment competition on a higher notch, which currently includes Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe, Lexus LC 500 and Bentley Continental GT on the global stage.
While attending the firm’s annual general meeting, Harald Krüger, Chief Executive at BMW confirmed that the 8-Series will be launched in 2018. However, a design concept model of the same will be showcased at this year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in Italy on May 26, before the production version goes on sale globally next year.
Harald Krüger said, “the BMW 8 Series coupe will be built on our tradition of luxurious sports coupes and add a genuine dream car to our line-up – a slice of pure automotive fascination”. He added, “the 8 Series coupe will underpin our claim to leadership in the luxury segment. I can tell you today that this will be a true luxury sports coupe.”
It is reported that the production version BMW 8-Series will borrow its under hood specs from the company's current flagship, the 7-series sedan, although in a different state of tune. Well, we can’t deny the possibilities for an M Sport and an M Performance version of the coupe.
