Hyundai Kona Electric launched in India at INR 25.30 lakh

Hyundai India has launched its first all-electric SUV named Kona Electric. It is priced at INR 25.30 lakh (ex-showroom, India). Here in India, this electric version  SUV will be available to purchase at dealerships as a CKD unit, with less localization in order to keep the price in check.

Apparently, the Kona EV appears almost similar to the conventionally powered model. However, the attributes which stand it apart from the conventional SUVs includes a distinct set of 17-inch alloys, badging and the absence of a front grille and exhausts. Other than this, the features which are the major highlights of the SUV consists of automatic LED headlights, LED tail-lamps, plastic body cladding and roof rails. The India-spec model of the Kona SUV will be provided in four solid colour options (black, blue, white and silver) and one dual-tone colour scheme (white with a black roof), for which you have to spend an extra amount of INR 20,000.

Inside the cabin, the Kona EV is decorated with a 7.0-inch digital dashboard, head-up display, automatic climate control(the option offers only the driver\'s side vents functioning) as well as an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay facility. Other than this, electric version the display provides information on power consumption, allow changes in EV’s charge setting and drives modes as well as per the driver suits.

Hyundai Kona gets 10-way electrically adjusted front seats with heating and ventilation feature. Furthermore, it is provided with leather upholstery on seats and steering wheel, heated wing mirrors, a powered sunroof, and an electric parking brake. In terms of safety, this electric SUV from Hyundai is loaded with attributes like ABS with EBD, ESC, 6 airbags, hill-start assist, traction control, rear camera, rear parking sensors, a rear defogger, a tyre pressure monitoring system, and Isofix child seat mounts. A Virtual Engine Sound System is also given as a safety feature, it helps in providing the sound of an internal combustion engine on the go.

The Kona Electric get propelled with the help of a permanent magnet synchronous motor. In association with a 39.2kWh lithium-ion battery, the motor is capable of producing the maximum power of 136hp along with 395Nm of torque. Also, the EV is rated to complete sprint 0-100kph in just 9.7sec. In a single charge, the battery is claimed to offer travel range of 452km. According to the European Union’s
Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure, the battery is rated to return the travel range of up to 289km on a single charge.

The lithium-ion battery can be fully charged in just 57min from a 50kW DC fast charger or takes 6hr 10min to get charged from a standard AC source. In addition to this, a set of three driving modes-Eco, Comfort and Sport and adjustable regenerative braking through paddle shifters are provided with the model.

For charging, a home charger with the EV while the Korean carmaker will also install charging stations at its dealerships. In addition to this, select Indian oil petrol pumps in four major cities will be blessed with the facility of EV charging points. The company offers Kona Electric with a 3-year/unlimited warranty as standard while the warranty of an 8-year/1.6 lakh kilometre is for the battery. As of now, the Kona Electric SUVs did not seek any direct competition in the segment. Though, it will lock horns with the going to be launched MG eZs in December 2019.
