Meet The New British 4x4 Tourer: Land Rover Reveals 2018 Range Rover Velar SUV

SUV enthusiasts, Pay your attention please!!  The all new 2018 Range Rover Velar has been unwrapped.

To fill the tiny gap between the Evoque and the Range Rover Sport in terms of price and size, Land Rover has unveiled the new baby SUV, Range Rover Velar. The striking mid-size entry is perfectly designed as a family tourer.

As we’ve written in our earlier post, the Velar is Based on JLR’s (Jaguar Land Rover) lightweight platform, a clean sheet design which also underpins the F-Pace. This contributes nearly 80 percent of aluminium in the construction of the Velar. The Velar features the most suited aerodynamic body construction throughout the Land Rover line up till now.

On the dimension front, the Velar features a wheelbase of approx. 2875 mm along with the total length of 4800 mm. This makes it approx 50 mm shorter than the Range Rover Sport in both the dimensions and approx 431 mm longer than the Evoque. Featuring the sleek design philosophy, the door handles sink back into the door and even the headlamps are super-slim LED slits.

“We wanted to elevate Range Rover's design DNA to a new level," says Massimo Frascella, Land Rover's exterior creative director. "We were looking for a new level of simplicity, with the flush door handles and slim LED lights. This will do so much for Range Rover.”

The name ‘Velar’ itself carries a history, it is derived from the Latin word ‘Velare’ which means to veil or cover.
Explaining the name, Land Rover said that back in 1969, a series of Range Rover prototypes were named Velare as their true identity had to be hidden.

You can say the Velar is a lower, longer version of its bigger and smaller Range Rover sisters.

Speaking of the inside fabric of the Velar, Amy Frascella, chief designer for colour and materials at JLR says, “If I take my personal viewpoint away. I still think it's the right thing to do for our customers in terms of curator choice and the changing climate - I mean that literally and figuratively. The definition of luxury materials is changing and what customers value in the products they buy is changing as well. We had to be ready for that.”

The Velar SUV is expected to go on sale by the end of 2018 in the global market. Once launched, the SUV will take on the likes of Porsche Macan, Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class Coupe and BMW X4.

Considering the Indian market, carmaker’s current SUV lineup includes the Range Rover, Range Rover Sports, Discovery 4, Discovery Sport, and the Evoque. And Evoque convertible is expected to join the family this year. However, no official word about the India launch of Range Rover Velar has come out yet.
