Mahindra & Mahindra has announced its new1.99 liter mHawk diesel engine that will be made available in the Delhi-NCR region. This motor is going to be fitted under the hood of New Generation Scorpio and XUV500 models. The step has been taken by the automaker as a remedial measure to the diesel vehicle ban in the country's capital.
Those who don't know what it's all about, the rising air pollution in Delhi led to the formulation of various strict laws. In December 2015, the Supreme Court had banned the diesel vehicles in Delhi-NCR region fitted with engines displacing more than 2,000 cc. As a result, many automobile giants had to suffer huge losses due to the ban. However, the maximum loss was borne by Mahindra as it is famous for its heavy diesel cars in the market.

When some automakers filed a petition in the court to get the ban lifted, it was denied by the court. Hence, Mahindra decided to opt for alternate measures. Out of many alternatives, the company decided to develop a new engine with sub-2000 displacement. This new 1.99 liter mHawk diesel engine will be fitted in the Scorpio and XUV500, pumping out 120Bhp and 140Bhp of maximum power respectively. As of now, it will be offered just for NCR and its price is also not known.
Explaining the mechanism of this new motor, it's a sleeved version of the existing 2.2 litre mHawk unit. In this technique, the cylinder bore is lessened in order to bring down the displacement, while the stroke remains same. This, in a way, helps in avoiding the huge development cost of an all new engine, thereby retaining the overall engine architecture.
