15 years ago i.e in 2003, Mercedes-Benz launched the first CLS which introduced the four-door coupe sedan body style. And now the third-generation CLS has been launched in India at a price tag of Rs 84.70 lakh (ex-showroom) which was launched globally at the last year’s LA Auto Show (2017). This year i.e. in 2018, Mercedes-Benz has launched 12 cars in India till now.
In all-new form, the third-generation CLS does not get the stylish swooping roofline and frameless doors from its predecessors, but it has softer lines and cleaner surfaces which follows Mercedes’ new Sensual Purity design language. The new CLS looks trimmed and less bulky as compared to the former generation.
The new CLS has the same platform that was of the Mercedes E-class and has grown in length, width and height. It also contains a 61mm longer wheelbase at 2,988mm which allows the larger rear door apertures and easy access of backseat. Same as the former model, the boot space is at 520 litres. Boosting practicality, the rear seat has in a 40/20/40 split.

The swoopy, flowing design theme continues in the internal with a contoured, shapely dashboard, which sees a 12.3-inch coloured display infotainment system taking centre stage. Android Auto functionality and Apple CarPlay is also available along with the infotainment system. Also, there is a standard Virtual Cockpit digital display for the instruments, and a neat design touch with the jet turbine-inspired AC vents. The sunroof is part of the equipment list, as are a 13-speaker Burmester audio system, 18-inch alloys, Air Body Control air suspension and MultiBeam LED headlights.
However, the foreign counterpart of Mercedes CLS gets multiple range of mild-hybrid engine options whereas in India only a single engine option is available having BS-VI-compliant, 2.0-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine putting out 245hp and 500Nm of torque, coupled to a 9-speed automatic gearbox. While top speed is rated at 250kmph,Mercedes claims 0-100kph sprint time of 6.4 seconds for the CLS 300d. The new CLS can also run on BS-IV-grade fuel same like other BS-VI-compliant Mercedes car models which are on sale.
Currently, there is no rival of the third-gen CLS but soon it will have when Audi will introduce the new-generation A7 Sportback.
