Next-gen 2017 BMW 5-Series Imported to India for Testing

The all new 2017 BMW 5-Series has been imported to India for testing purpose. The next-gen sedan is expected to go on sale in the country by the end of next year while it was globally unveiled in October this year. The spied test mule was heavily camouflaged and loaded on an open freight carrier truck. BMW will likely bring the next-gen 5-Series along with the M sport variant.

The 2017 BMW 5-Series borrows its design clues from its elder sibling, new 7-Series which was launched earlier this year in India, and looks sharper than its previous generation model. The seventh generation 5-Series model is also increased in size over the regular model, length is extended by 36mm, width is increased by 6mm, height is grown by 2mm and the wheelbase is also increased by 7mm leaving more space for the occupants. Now it measures 4,935mm in length, 1,868mm in width, 1,466mm height and features an extended wheelbase of 2,975mm.

The German luxury brand, BMW had wrapped of its much anticipated next-gen 5-Series on October 13, 2016, and the new sedan was looking stunning on the design front and loaded with several techno-smart equipment. The new 5-Series features first in the industry, the remote 3D view technology which enables the owner to digitally monitor his or her BMW 5-Series via a BMW connected smartphone application.
Coming on the car details, the 2017 5 series cuts off around 100 kg of total weight than its predecessor, thanks to its CLAR (CLuster ARchitecture) rear wheel drive platform. The exterior design explains the evolution over the generations with larger grill extended to the headlamp clusters, aggressive sporty bumper with larger air dams and new LED taillamps with a more rounded design.

Inside the cabin, the new 2017 5 Series features a 7-Series inspired cabin, as we notified in the earlier posts. The similarities include steering wheel, a fully digital instrument cluster and a large iDrive smart infotainment system. If some reports are to be believed, this iDrive system will feature gesture control system.

Mechanically, the next-gen 2017 is expected to be offered in both petrol and diesel powertrains with two new engine options. The entry-level BMW 530i will be fitted with a 2.0 4-cylinder inline engine which was previously offered in the BMW 528i. The turbocharged direct injection is capable of churning out the maximum power of 248 hp and the peak torque of 349 Nm. This configuration boosts the BMW 530i from 0 to 100 kmph in sub 6 seconds and allows up to a top speed of 209 kmph.

The range-topping powertrain will be featured in the new BMW 540i that includes a 3.0-litre inline 6-cylinder engine pack and generates a maximum power of 335 hp along with the peak torque of 450 Nm. The BMW 540i sedan attains a 100 kmph from a standstill in just 4.9 seconds while the top speed is electronically limited to 209 kmph.
A plug-in hybrid powertrain for 2017 5-Series is also a talk of the town. The transmission will be offered with a choice of 6-Speed manual and 8-Speed automatic while the rear-wheel drive will be standard throughout the range. Though, there will be an xDrive all-wheel drive system as an optional.
