Tata Zest Diesel Variants Named XM and XMS To Offer 75 PS Engine

Tata Motors has made some major tweaks in its Zest line-up. Now, the XM and XMS variants will be powered by a 75 PS diesel engine. This engine was earlier available on the base XE variant only. Presently, the XM and XMS variants cost around INR 6,83,298 and Rs 7,10,868 (ex-showroom New Delhi) respectively.

Tata Zest made its debut in 2014, offering three major variants, namely, 90PS petrol, 90PS diesel and 75PS diesel. The petrol was available in four variants (XE, XM, XMS and XT) and the diesel was available in six variants (XE, XM, XMS, XMA, XT and XTA). However, no changes have been made to the petrol variant. As of now, the XM and XMS trims that were available with the 90 PS motor will be replaced by the 75PS engine.

Mechanically, Tata Zest diesel comes with a Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre Quadrajet engine, which is further mated to either a five-speed manual or a five-speed AMT gearbox. The Petrol Zest is powered by Tata's selfmade 1.2-litre Revotron engine, which gets mated to a five-speed manual transmission.

In the Indian market, Tata Zest holds rivalry against cars like Maruti Swift Dzire, Ford Figo Aspire, Honda Amaze and Hyundai Xcent in the compact sedan segment. Perhaps, it is believed that Tata Motors is trying to price the new variants according to the competition, maintaining the order among the trims . Moreover, only the top variant of Tata Zest like XT and XTA will be offered with alloy wheels.
