Volkswagen has stepped in the performance-oriented Indian auto segment with the go-fast version of its existing popular hatchback Polo - the new Polo GT Sport (based on the Polo GT TSI). The carmaker has added racing genetics and slightly re-engineered the car to achieve the goal.
Basically, it is a sports variant of already sport hot-hatch with a number of aesthetic tweaks through inside out along with the bigger wheels. With the new GT Sport, the German carmaker is all set to make the competition tougher for its rivals in the performance segment.
Country’s giant auto manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki recently launched the go-fast update of its one of the best selling hatchback Baleno - named Baleno RS. And now, Volkswagen has added the heat in the same segment with sport trim of Polo GT.
Let’s take a look at the sports package of the Volkswagen Polo GT Sport.
The new version rides on the bigger 16-inch ‘Burnished’ alloy wheels which are 2-inch larger than the outgoing Polo hatchback. It boasts of new side sticker with ‘GT Sport’ label, along with the ‘GT TSI’ badge affix on the C-pillar. Just like its elder sibling, it also features ‘GT’ moniker mounted on the front grille.
The sports model comes with contrasting glossy blacked out roof. The wing mirrors have also been painted in a black finish with turn indicator mounted on them. As the new GT Sport carries the racing spirit, it is also equipped with a spoiler at the rear.
Step inside, and you will see a whole black leather upholstery with the embossed ‘GT Sport’ tag.
Under the hood, the new Polo GT Sport will continue to get power from the existing lineup that is fitted with the outgoing Polo version. It is a 1.2-litre turbocharged, four-cylinder engine that generates maximum power of 105 PS along with the peak torque of 175Nm. The motor is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
With the introduction of new Polo GT Sport, we can see that carmakers in India are showing their interest in the performance segment as well. Recently, Ford launched its bestselling hatchback Figo in sports guise, Figo S. and before that, we got Baleno RS. Now, the Indian performance enthusiasts get several options while buying a go-fast car under INR 15 lakh.
