The much-awaited SUV from the German auto major, the 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan has finally been launched in India and will be on sale from today onwards at a starting price of INR 27.98 Lakh. This is the second-generation Tiguan and will be locally assembled here in the country at the company’s Aurangabad facility, in Maharashtra.

The new Tiguan will be assembled alongside the other Skoda and Audi models, except the Rapid at Aurangabad plant, not at the Chakan facility. As the new SUV is based on the German Automotive Group’s MQB (modular transverse matrix) which also runs the Skoda Octavia, Superb and the Audi A3 produced at the Aurangabad facility. Moreover, the yet-to-be-launched the Skoda Kodiaq and the Karoq (the Yeti’s successor) also underpin the same MQB platform.
With the Tiguan, Volkswagen has introduced its first ever SUV model in the country. On the exterior, the SUV boasts of LED headlamps with LED DRLs (Daytime Running Lights) insert, LED tail lamps and Panoramic sunroof with LED surround lighting. The SUV rides on either 17-inch or 18-inch (for Highline) alloy wheels.
Inside the cabin, occupants’ comfort and convenience are kept of higher priority, as the Tiguan gets three-zone automatic climate control system with rear controls, leather-wrapped flat bottom steering wheel, electronically operable front seats, heating function for both the front seats, memory function for the driver seat, 8.0-inch Composition touchscreen smart infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity and 8-speaker sound system as a part of standard details.
On the safety front, the SUV is loaded with six airbags, ESC (electronic stability control), ABS, traction control (ASR), EDTC (engine drag torque control), child seat anchors and front and rear parking sensors.
Offered in only single powertrain, the Volkswagen Tiguan is powered by a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder, turbocharged TDI diesel engine, developing the maximum power of 143 PS at 4,000 rpm along with the peak torque of 340 Nm which comes out at 1,750 - 2,750 rpm. All the engine outputs are channelled to all four-wheel via carmaker’s 4MOTION standard in both variants. The engine is mated to a 7-Speed DSG transmission. The Tiguan returns an ARAI-certified fuel efficiency of 17.06 kmpl.
