Why Delhi Government Issue Ban on Non-BS IV Compliant Two Wheelers ?

Increasing pollution is the one of the major problem in the National Capital Region. The Delhi government and the National Green Tribunal has implemented some measures to control the increasing pollution level. Odd-even policy is one of them and other that is going to be implemented strictly is the BS-IV Norms. On the same road, Delhi government issued a ban on the registrations of all non BS-IV compliant two-wheelers in the city.

Basically, BS Norms is the Bharat Stage emission standards, introduced in 2000, to regulate the output of air pollutants from internal combustion engine equipment, including motor vehicles. The other standards and the timeline which will also come into the force, are set by the Central Pollution Control Board which comes under the Ministry of Environment & Forests and climate change.

Initially BS-IV Norms were introduced only in 13 cities in April 2010. Then further it extended to 50 cities by the March 2015 and April 2017, deadline for the BS-IV norms to applicable across the country.

At the Himalayan launch, Mr. Rudratej Singh, president, Royal Enfield, said to the press conference: “The Delhi government wants BS-IV to be implemented immediately which is why it is not registering any new BS-III vehicles. Delhi is a big market for us and we are working on making the motorcycle BS-IV compliant. But this is the case only in Delhi right now and there is no such concern from any other region.”

However, Royal Enfield clarifies that they will definitely bring the BS-IV norms compliant Himalayan and other RE products, before April 2017. Other manufacturers like, recently launched Bajaj V15 and new Suzuki Access scooter may also be affected from this ban, because of their pending approvals by transport authority. Well, no official order by the Delhi government has been produced on banning registrations and industry is asking approval for registration of BS-III norms two-wheelers norms while BS-IV norms are notified.
