The third-generation BMW X3 has been caught testing penalty of times, and now again. This time a heavily camouflaged test mule of performance based X3 xDriveM40i M model hit the Nurburgring Nordschleife Circuit for its high-speed test.

The regular model of the next-gen X3, internally codenamed as G01 will be globally introduced sometime in next year, while the hotter M-version model will hit the market by 2018. From the latest captured video by Automotive Mike, the 2018 M-model has been spotted doing some laps test. The video reveals the first look of it and gives an idea about how it will be like. Furthermore, it will be the first X3 model which will be solely supervised by the BMW’s ‘M-division’.
Under the hood, the X3 xDriveM40i is expected to power by BMW’s twin turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-line six-cylinder petrol engine which also powers the BMW’s new 7-series. The power unit is mated to a new fuel efficient 9-speed automatic ZF transmission box.
Some reports suggest, there will be a diesel option which will be powered by a milder version of the BMW’s 3.0-litre in-line 6-cylinder engine configuration which has also seen under the hood of X5 M50d and develops 381 hp of maximum power.
While there is confirmation on X3 M, it could be a turbocharged 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder unit which features an increased power figure of 431 hp and also used in the latest M3.
Coming to the aesthetics, the regular model of next-gen X3 will feature an upgraded cabin including a larger dash-top infotainment display with the latest version of the BMW’s technology-wise iDrive system. The X3 prototype also features longer rear doors which suggest a slightly longer wheelbase than its predecessor which has a wheelbase of 2810 mm.
Taking a look at the previous the spy shots, the X3 will retain the same iconic fascia from the second generation model, but also add some extensive package to its exteriors such as a roof-spoiler, quadruple exhaust set-up and larger wheels.
