Audi India Today launched the facelift update of its smallest offering Audi A3 sedan in two powertrains. The petrol powered (35 TFSI) 2017 Audi A3 is priced at INR 30.5 Lakh while the asking price for the diesel version (35 TDI) of the same is INR 32.30 Lakh (both the prices are ex-showroom, New Delhi). This is a mid-cycle update of the Audi A3 and is based on the third-generation A3 hatchback which is not available in India.
The A3 sedan was first introduced in India in 2014 and now received the first major update. The same updated model, however, was globally showcased in April 2016. This new Audi A3 facelift boasts of updates in terms of both aesthetically and mechanically. The changes to its design cues laid through inside-out of the car along with a revised powertrain.
On the exteriors, the refreshed Audi A3 features a new single frame grille upfront similar to that of the Audi A4. The headlamps are also inspired from the elder sibling A4, but still, the A3 misses the bespoke Matrix headlamps which are being offered on the global version. Carmaker’s Xenon plus units are now standard in the updated range.
Moving on the sides, the profile receives no updates, remains identical to the outgoing model. The 2017 Audi A3 facelift, however, drives on the new set of 16-inch alloy wheels. At the rear, the tail lamps become sharper and sleek along with turn indicator mounted on them. The bumper has also been subtly revamped.
Step inside, and you will see a whole blacked out cabin aura. The dashboard and the upholstery are painted black. Other rich features of the upcoming 2017 Audi A3 include a 7-inch retractable display for the MMI infotainment system, Audi phone box which enables wireless charging system, climate control system, panoramic sunroof, powered front seats and front and rear parking sensors. Besides, the new A3 will come with a wireless charging box for smartphones. What she misses is carmaker's Virtual Cockpit -12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, engine start/stop button and keyless entry.
The major update to the 2017 Audi A3 lies beneath its hood. The carmaker has replaced the more powerful 108 hp 1.8-litre engine with a smaller 1.4-litre TFSI engine which, however, produces lower power but increases the fuel economy. This new downsized motor generates maximum power of 150 PS (30 PS less than the engine it replaced) along with the peak torque of 250 Nm (similar to earlier). The similar powerhouse is also come fitted in the Audi A4. This power mill is mated to 7-speed DSG gearbox.
This engine also features cylinder-on-demand tech which shuts off two of its cylinders at the time no need for more power output. And hence improve the overall mileage of the vehicle. The new Audi A3 returns a claimed fuel economy of 19.2 kmpl after a bump of 3 kmpl.
On the other hand, the diesel powertrain remains unchanged. It gets the same 2.0-litre TDI engine paired with 6-speed DSG automatic transmission and develops the maximum power of 143 PS and the peak torque of 320 Nm. The whole power is transmitted to the front wheels.
The new 2017 Audi A3 facelift is all set to lock the horns against the likes of newly updated Mercedes-Benz CLA, A-Class and facelift Volvo V40.
