The renowned FCA-owned off-road automobile manufacturer, Jeep has dropped the curtains from its all new baby SUV, the Compass. Globally marked as a compact SUV, Jeep Compass will be a tough rival for Hyundai Tucson and Honda CR-V. This smallest offering from Jeep will be officially launched soon, while its production will be kicked off in company’s Ranjangaon based facility in June 2017.
The Indian version of the Jeep Compass will be fitted with a diesel powered 2.0-litre engine which develops a maximum power of 170 Nm along with peak torque of 350 Nm. It will also get a 1.4-litre Multiair turbocharged petrol mill that generates maximum power of 162 PS and a peak torque of 250 Nm. Both the powertrains will be mated to either 6-speed manual transmission or 7-Speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.
On the standard version of the jeep Compass, power will be transferred to front wheels only. However, there will also be an option for AWD (All Wheel Drive) system. The later one is blessed with carmaker’s software controls named Selec-Terrain which gets four different driving modes - Auto, Snow, Sand and Mud to offer smooth drive under tough conditions. One should take a note here that AWD drive system will only be offered with the manual transmission as the Auto mode cut the power supply to the rear wheels.
With the Compass SUV, Jeep majorly focused on the on-road performance instead of going with the traditional off-road qualities. Compass gets a decent ground clearance of 178 meters and is fitted with independent suspension featuring adjustable damping which further makes the ride jolt-free.
Inside the cabin, Compass sounds more Cherokee than Wrangler as carmaker aimed at city aura. The small SUV wonder features 5-seat arrangement in two row and is one of the ideal drives for both city and highway conditions. Hexagonal shaped center console, perforated leather on the seats and the whole ambience of the Compass cabin perfectly defines how Jeep incredibly presented the mixture of rugged and mellowed theme.
On the safety front, it consists dual-front airbags standard (6-airbags for 4x4 version), ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), EBD (Electronically Brakeforce Distribution) and Hill-start assist. High strength material and hot stamped parts have been used for the chassis construction that adds durability along with reducing the overall weight of the vehicle. The exterior reflects a great fusion of Grand Cherokee and Wrangler SUVs.
