Stepping into the phase of green fuel era, the prominent automakers are going through a transformation, making sure that the emissions are less and makes least harm to the environment. It seems like the automakers like Mercedes-Benz and BMW are not willing to use the V8 diesel engine in the near future. Rather, they are indulged into developing new class of low emitting efficient engines. As of now, BMW has unveiled a new Quad Turbo diesel engine at the 37th International Vienna Motor Symposium. BMW has also confirmed that the latest addition in the powertrain family is the replacement for the present tri-turbo engine.
Notedly, the 3.0-litre, six-cylinder unit has been powering the new BMW 7-series, named the 750d xDrive. The new engine comes with dual low-pressure and high pressure turbochargers. The automaker claims that the engine is good enough to prepare a maximum power output of 400PS followed by a peak torque of 760Nm.
The engine is said to electronically tuned to deliver even more torque if needed. The engine comes paired to a eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox, which makes the torque in between 2,000-3,000 rpm. As we see that the power figures have gone higher in comparison to the old tri-turbo engine, the automaker also claims that the new engine is around 5 percent more fuel efficient.
BMW claims that the 750d xDrive can sprint 0-100 km/h in 4.5 seconds, keeping its pace with the top speed of up to 250 km/h. The new engine is likely to come with the BMW’s sedan flagship as well. The automaker may power the models such as X% SUV and the 5-series models with the same powertrain. These flagship models will makes their debut in the upcoming Paris Motor Show, which has been scheduled this year.
