Green Number Plates On EV’s to Bring Non Fiscal Incentives for Buyers

Electric vehicles in the country will now have some discrimination from the internal combustion counterparts while running on the road. All electric vehicles in the country will be available with a new green license plate. The government of India announced the new initiative to make electric vehicles looking different than other vehicles. A new unique colored plate for electric vehicles will be used with both the commercial and private vehicles.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has also mandated a green registration mark for all electrical vehicles. The move from the Ministry was already approved by the Center earlier this year.

These number plates will not only make electric vehicles easily identifiable but bring added benefits like benefits like :

1. Toll Concession.
2. Parking Priorities.
3. Free entries in congested places.

The move is seen as a necessary medicine for the industry which has seen below expectation adoption. EV industry in economically driven Indian Automobile sector has to ensure that despite the costly price tag of the vehicles, the Indian Buyers enjoy low maintenance. Amenities and respites like the ones above can change the fortunes of the industry in days ahead. And non-fiscal incentives are a welcome first step towards the mountainous journey of full EV adoption.

Electric-E-Riksha

Recently, Mahindra and Tata Motors are making electric cars in the country for private and commercial vehicles.

This special number plate will deliver a different identity and perks to the vehicles on road. The perks include preferential treatment in parking, easier identification, proposed concessions in tolls on the road and free entry into certain destined congested zones. For commercial vehicles, the government is thinking to exempt the vehicles from permits. This move certainly supports the growth of e-taxis, e-busses, and e-rickshaws in India.

Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister said, "The government has approved distinctive green license plates for electric vehicles to encourage people to use electric vehicles. Such vehicles will be fitted with green license plates bearing numbers in white fonts for private cars and yellow font for taxis. Exemption from permit will be a game changer as restricted permit regime is a major concern. E-rickshaw growth is attributable to the permit exemption and there is scope to extend the exemption to the e-buses, e-taxis, e-autos, and e-bikes. E-auto and e-buses may have a big impact since getting a new permit are extremely difficult."

Further, the government also permits the teenager of 16-18 years old to ride electric scooters on roads without a license. Right now, the youngster between 16-18 years of age is permitted to ride mopeds under 50cc. The government has as well emphasized the electric move and allowed a reduction of GST from 28% on electric cars. Now, the applicable GST on electric cars in the country is 12%.
