Carbon-fiber has been into practice in various sports and luxury car these days. All because, Carbon fibre is said to be five times stronger as steel. It is quite good in stiffness and weighs very light. and twice as stiff, yet weighs about two-thirds less. The wheels also provide more agility and strength to the cars. Now, General Motors is likely to assemble the carbon-fiber wheels on the prominent performance cars like Corvettes, Camaros and the Cadillacs. However, it will be available as an option from now onwards.
The American car manufacturer also provides the CF wheels to Ford for the models such as GT and the Mustang Shelby GT350R. Some reports suggest that the upcoming 2017 Ford GT is likely to come wearing the split-five-spoke carbon-fiber wheels.
William Rodgers, GM light polymer systems technical fellow, research and development, said, “It’s a performance-driven execution. Cars like the Cadillac’s V-Series models would be the ideal candidates (for carbon-fiber wheels).”
Rodgers also aims that the use of carbon-fiber wheels in the performance cars will help in the reduction of the kerb weight by 16kg, improving the dynamics overall and also increasing the car’s efficiency. This will also distribute the weight of individual components such as tyres, wheels, brake assemblies, wheel bearings and hubs. Minimising the unsprung weight will help controlling the suspension system, enhancing its working on the uneven roads and corners.
GM is also working on the testing of tyres on the wheels and would assemble with the new ones soons after proper testing. Rodgers also stated that GM will keep the prices of the carbon-fiber wheels competitive and as per the demand. The automaker has not committed for the exact launch of the CF wheels with the cars.
