From many days, Maruti Suzuki was working on giving the in-house diesel powertrain to its cars and at last the company has launched the new 1.5-litre four-cylinder diesel in the Ciaz. This is not the first in-house diesel of the Maruti because the company earlier offered in the Celerio the 793cc two-cylinder engine but it discontinued the diesel model before few days.
The new Maruti Ciaz is powered by the 1.5-litre DDiS 225 diesel powertrain which churns out 95PS of maximum power at 4,000rpm and 225Nm of maximum torque between 1,500rpm and 2,500rpm. The Ciaz costs Rs 9.97 lakh for base variant and for the higher variant, the price tag is Rs 11.37 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The diesel range does not come in entry-level Sigma variant but starts from the Delta variant. Because of the upgraded and advanced specification, the price tag of the lower-end Delta trim has been increased by Rs 17,000 and the top-end Alpha variant gets the hike of Rs 35,000 in comparison to the old 1.3-litre diesel furnished model.
As compared to the outgoing Fiat-sourced, 1.3-litre diesel powertrain-equipped model, the newer and latest 1.5-litre diesel powertrain in the Maruti Ciaz churns out 5hp of power and 25Nm of torque more. The new powertrain is married to the 6-speed gearbox unit i.e. replaced the old 5-speed manual. If the rivals are to be seen, then as compared to them the new 1.5 diesel powertrain has the smallest ‘hp’ figure but it still is positioned above the Honda City diesel if torque is seen. Given below is the list of the rivals of the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz in terms of the diesel powertrain-

In spite of having larger displacement powertrain , the Ciaz diesel has the most fuel efficient and also has an ARAI-certified mileage per litre i.e. of 26.82kpl which is less than the old 1.3 diesel Ciaz- 28.09kpl. While the Honda City diesel stands at the second position in terms of the fuel efficiency which is 25.1kpl. The down fall of the mileage of the new Ciaz as compared to the old one is because the company did not furnish the SHVS mild-hybrid system of the brand which was offered in the 1.3-litre DDiS powertrain in its more powerful, 90hp state of tune.

But the Volkswagen Vento, Hyundai Verna, and Skoda Rapid diesels gives the customers the extra convenience of the automatic gearbox
