As a result of consultations, Motor Vehicle Bill 2019 was passed by the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, to reform traffic laws under the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988. This reformed bill has details of new penalties that will be levied on violation of traffic rules. Prior to this, the bill was examined and passed in Lok Sabha. The law was earlier proposed in 2017 but collapsed with the termination in 16th Lok Sabha.

The 2019 amendment was brought in the Rajya Sabha by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari with the aim of attaining the uniformity in road transportation. The bill has a set of strict penalties for traffic violations.
