Don’t think if it’s a car, it can only create history on the racing tracks with the record times, it can also do far beyond that. And this time Porsche has stunned the world by towing a passenger aircraft!
Yeah! Someone at Porsche’s HQ decided to try the muscles of Porsche Cayenne and the results were far from the imagination. The guy who was behind the wheels, says, “My mirrors were quite full of Airbus, which was interesting”. Sounds terrific!
It’s all started with Porsche GB technician Richard Payne who decided that the Cayenne is capable of dragging the weight of an Airbus A380. After considering the engine, transmission and chassis structure of the car, a call was made to Air France and for sure, the aircraft maker would have taken it with a warm welcome. Payne drove from London to Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport and smashed the Guinness World Record by towing an Airbus A380 with Porsche Cayenne S diesel.
However, this is not the first time when a car pulled off a passenger aircraft. Almost a decade ago, the Volkswagen Touareg V10 TDI created history by towing the Boeing 747 aeroplane. But, this time we are talking about Airbus A380 - the world’s largest and heaviest passenger aircraft.
Breaking the previous Guinness World Record of towing 115 tonnes by a car, Porsche Cayenne S diesel pulled 285 tonnes Air France Airbus A380. The story hasn't gone to an end yet, after the Cayenne S diesel, Porsche decided to achieve the same feat using a less torquey twin-turbo petrol Cayenne S as well.
Richard Payne said, “It did it - I'm so relieved! We don't usually go this far to test the limits of our cars but I think today we got pretty close. I could tell that it was working hard but the Cayenne didn't complain and just got on with it. My mirrors were quite full of Airbus, which was interesting. Our cars can go a bit beyond what our customers might expect - they're designed to be tough.”
The reason why this incident is grabbing so much attentions across the world, apart from the fact that the Airbus A380 was 250 times heavier than the Cayenne, is that it is a pure standard model without any modification.
The adjudicator from Guinness World Records, Pravin Patel, had this to say: “I’ve verified some amazing record attempts during my time, but watching a Porsche Cayenne tow one of the largest aircraft in the world definitely ranks as among the most spectacular.”
Let’s take a look under the hood of the one who put things into perspective, Porsche Cayenne S diesel is fitted with a 4.1-litre biturbo V8 engine that churns out a maximum power of 385 bhp along with an immense torque of 850 Nm.
