Porsche Declines to Build an Electric 911 For Now

Previously, the news was all around about the Porsche’s first ever all-electric vehicle, which will follow the steps of Mission-E-Concept and have a sedan like shape, is now reported to get a halt for sometime. According to the media reports, it won’t make its presence in the market before 2020.

August Achleitner, Porsche’s Chief developer for the 911 and 718 range, predicts that the plug-in-hybrid and electric vehicles don’t have a good market in near future and therefore they have pulled back their hands from the sports car such as the 911 electric or hybrid.

At the time of speaking with Drive, August Achleitner said, “Right now it wouldn't make sense in our opinion to offer an electric 911, or hybrid version, because there are so many disadvantages of such a concept within this narrow layout of a 911.” He added, “Of course, we could do it but such a car would get so heavy with so many disadvantages that we would not offer it."

According to Achleitner, it’s not a good time to offer cars like 911 electric or hybrid to the market, but the automaker will continue to evaluate the market very well and once the situation looks favorable later in future and the popularity of electric vehicles will increase, they will start working upon it.

"I don't know," Achleitner said. "I guess not today. But I think it could change with the times, so we have to be careful. Right now I would say no, but you have to follow all these developments all over the world from year to year and that's our job.”

"We have several strategy meetings, two or three per year, where we check all these situations all over the world. Sometimes we make a change in the strategy and say 'maybe this is a little bit more important than the other one', we cannot do all simultaneously."
