Royal Enfield that is renowned globally for its trademark thump, is all set to make way for the silent humming of an electric motor soon. Since an electric motor is under development at the company's technology centre in the UK. Rudratej Singh, president, Royal Enfield, confirmed at the limited edition Pegasus launch by quoting that a dedicated team is working on the electric platform at the company’s technology centre in the UK.
Rudratej further added, “(We) may need to look at things differently for electrical because we are still learning.” it clearly indicates besides sticking to the defining characteristics of its motorcycles, the motorcycle maker is looking forward. It is not the first time when the brand is going to attempt something new. Earlier than this, the offering such as the Himalayan and the Thunderbird X also showcases an off-beat attempt from the manufacturer.
If the electric vehicle segment is considered, it is the future of mobility. Not only the Royal Enfield but also several named manufacturers globally are aiming to develop their EVs. Native brands like Hero MotoCorp Ltd, Bajaj Auto Ltd, TVS Motor Co. Ltd and Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India Pvt. Ltd is on the list which considering to develop greener vehicles. Hero has already invested in Ather Energy Pvt. Ltd, whereas Bajaj has its sub-brands such as Bajaj’s chic and aspirational Urbanite brand which looks into this matter. It’s necessary for any motorbike maker to stay relevant in the market, especially with the trend that is going to changing the future of mobility across the globe.
Furthermore, the Royal Enfield has to overhaul its product lineup in order to stay relevant. As the country will see the implementation of more stricter BS-VI emission norms by 2020. This major aspect is also in brand’s consideration and under process by evaluating the possibilities to re-engineered products for the future.
