The first sub-4 meter compact sedan, Volkswagen Ameo, made by the German auto-maker, has been launched in India at a starting price of INR 5.1 Lakh (Ex-showroom Mumbai). With the launch of Ameo, Volkswagen has made its entry in the compact sedan segment and this will go in the battle against the segment leader, Maruti Suzuki’s Swift Dzire. Maruti Suzuki’s Swift Dzire ruled over the 55 percent of the market in the sub-4 meter segment.
Pre-bookings for the first ever made-for-India car Ameo, have already been started and it will be available at the Volkswagen’s authorised dealership by the end of this month. Launched at a very fair price, this compact sedan will take on against other popular cars of this segment like Honda Amaze, Hyundai Xcent, Ford Figo Aspire and Tata Zest.
The German auto giant has recently recalled around 1,98,000 cars from the Indian market (About 6,00,000 units across the world) over the emission scandal in the diesel variants. So as of now, company has launched the Ameo with only 1.2L petrol engine option. But according to the reports, Volkswagen is expected to launch the diesel option of the Ameo, during the festive season later this year. And the diesel variant will run by the same 1.5L engine option which is the part of company’s emission scandal.
What’s Inside? Based on the same platform as Polo and Vento, this compact sedan also shares the equal features like Volkswagen’s signature flat-bottom steering wheel, steering mounted controls and touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay. The Ameo also gets some first-in-class features like rain-sensing wipers, cruise control, anti-pinch window for both front and rear, and chilled glovebox.
How’s Safety? Identical to the Polo and Vento, the Ameo also comes with dual airbags (Driver and front passenger) as standard across all variants. Volkswagen cars are considered as the safest cars under INR 10 lakh. Notedly, company’s Vento TSi scored all five starts in the NCAP crash test.
What about the power? The Ameo is powered by a 1.2-liter 3-cylinder MPI petrol engine that is mated to a 5-Speed manual gearbox that gives a maximum power output of 75 PS and churns out a peak torque of 110 Nm.
How much it costs you? This sub-four meter compact sedan gets a price tag of INR 5,13,864 for the base variant (Trendline Variant) and INR 6,91,680 for the top model (Highline Variant).
At the launching event, Michael Mayer, Director of Volkswagen Passenger Car India said, “Today is very special day for Volkswagen in India, as we introduced our first ever made-for-india carline, Volkswagen Ameo.The Ameo underlines our philosophy of offering the best of technology and safety standards packaged at an attractive price.” Further adding more, “Through the Ameo, we are confident of cementing Volkswagen’s strong presence in the compact sedan segment and further expand the Volkswagen India family.”
Volkswagen expects around 15 Percent production hike with the Ameo model in India. The Ameo is part of the four new launches, as planned by Volkswagen for the Indian market. The other three anticipated models such as Tiguan, Passat GTE and Beetle are likely to be launched by the end of this year.
