Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference took place in San Jose, California. The company, at its big event, introduced new and improved versions of its iOS, macOS and watchOS platforms, a connected home speaker device dubbed as HomePod, and a new iPad Pro tablet. Let’s have a detailed description on what Apple announced on its Monday event:
tvOS
The company on the launch of its new tvOS said that the Apple TV is about to get a new and enhanced content source, as the Amazon Prime Video is coming to Apple TV very soon along with Apple’s new TV application. Moreover, Apple CEO Tim Cook also promised to deliver more updates for tvOS later this year.
watchOS 4
Apple at its annual event also announced watchOS 4, a new version of Apple watchOS, a software which powers Apple watch. The new version doesn’t get major improvements that appeared in the watchOS 3, still, there are few admirable changes along with some new features offered by the company.
By using machine learning, the new Siri-powered watch face will customise its content in real time throughout the day, which includes some basic professional tasks such as reminders, traffic information, upcoming meetings, news, smart home controls, etc. at the time when they are supposed to be most relevant.
The new fitness features introduced by Apple in the new watchOS include smarter workout controls, more prompts to set goals, and two-way workout data exchange with certain gym equipment, via partnerships with major manufacturers. This time, the company also allowed users to use the watch face as a flashlight or blinking light during runs.
Moreover, the new watchOS will also provide better connectivity solutions with other hardware gadgets, like continuous glucose monitors, via Bluetooth. More functionalities and features will be introduced by the company at the time of its hardware launching.
macOS High Sierra
According to Apple SVP Craig Federighi, this year, instead of making any major macOS update, the company has just spent the complete year perfecting it. The new macOS by Apple includes updates to Safari, including autoplay video blocking and “intelligent tracking prevention” to cut back at ad trackers; better Photos editing and organisation; a faster new behind-the-scenes file system; a stronger updated graphics engine that supports VR development; and support for the Unity and Unreal gaming engines.
The company seems to be running on the right way, as the macOS doesn’t need new features as much as efficiency and power. The free update will be available soon, and a beta version will also be available before rolling out the full version.
New Macs, including the iMac Pro
Apple, this summer introduced updated versions of its MacBook lineup along with new iMac Pro. The new iMac by the company features a better display, faster processors and graphics performance (for VR creation), enhanced memory capacity and some new connectivity ports. Moreover, the new MacBook and MacBook Pro will also be seen coupled with faster chips and drives soon in the market. The MacBook Air is also getting a faster chipset and the 13-inch MacBook Pro will be available with a low entry-level price.
Apart from the announcement, the company has also shown a glimpse of the new, high-performance version of the iMac. The new iMac is blessed with a 27-inch, darker grey design language and is powered by up to 18 processor cores. Designed basically for pro users, the new iMac will start shipping out by December 2017 with a starting price tag of USD 4,999.
iOS 11 including AR Kit and iPad-specific features
Apple has also introduced its most important platform, which is the backbone of its iPhone and iPads. The new version of OS brings changes in almost every feature of the handset, let’s see what changes will consumers see in it:
iMessages will now make better synchronisation between the devices and will automatically free up the inbuilt storage by offloading old photo and video messages to the cloud.
With the help of a new “Apple Pay Cash” card, Apple Pay will now allow users to make person-to-person payments via iMessage.
Siri will now be able to translate queries into other languages such as French, Spanish and Chinese. It will also have more context for proactive suggestions and will now come with a support for more third-party applications via the SiriKit developers kit, which was unveiled last year by the company. Moreover, it is now also able to read the text on your screen, which can help you in improving your reading skills and in pronouncing complicated words like Reykjavik.
In the new OS version, the camera will be seen using more efficient algorithms file formats for videos and photos, which means they will now use less space than before.
This time, the company has merged the lock screen and notification bar into one and the Apple Maps will now have a more detailed description for airport maps.
The company has also introduced a new “do not disturb while driving” safety mode, which will mute the notifications and will automatically send an “I’m driving!” message while you’re driving.
Apple has also provided a multi-room home speaker support for its HomeKit service, along with a new AirPlay 2 feature, which will make it easier to play music and audio to other devices.
Users will also see a redesigned App Store for the first time, which will look a lot like Apple Music.
The iPad specific features in new iOS 11 include a new dock for apps, a new multi-app view for multitasking, drag-and-drop support and a new Files app. It will get easier to mark up screenshots and documents with the help of Apple Pencil Stylus.
The company has also introduced some major tools for developers including AR Kit for augmented-reality apps, which has also been claimed as the “largest AR platform in the world” by the company. Moreover, it will also provide new natural language capabilities and machine learning, which includes things like photo recognition and face tracking.
iPad Pro 10.5-inch
Apple has also launched a new 10.5-inch version of the iPad Pro, which has been developed for professional users. The tablet will have thinner bezels around its edges, will support a full-width keyboard cover, and will also avail a home button.
It is blessed with a better display with richer colour and a new feature called ProMotion that updates its content up to 120 times per second. It is also a bit smarter as compared to its other siblings and will come with 64GB of inbuilt memory space. The company will start shipping it out next week with a starting price rate of USD 649.
HomePod: Apple’s new Siri speaker
Lastly, the gigantic technology company has also unveiled its all new “HomePod”, a new “breakthrough home speaker”, which will start selling in the month of December in white and space grey colour variants at USD 349.
The new speaker by the company will be seen competing with Sonos and the Amazon Echo. It comes with an ability to detect the shape of your room and will automatically customise audio for an enhanced experience. The “Musicologist” feature in the speaker will respond to “Hey! Siri”, play from your Apple Music account, and answer questions about the music it’s playing. It will also handle additional Siri queries, like weather, news, messages, podcasts, stocks, controlling smart home devices via HomeKit, etc.
