Toyota Kirloskar Motor has announced a recall of 170 hybrid Prius units in the country as a part of its overall global recall of 1.43 million vehicles due to defective airbags. The recall in India affects only those 170 units of Prius that was manufactured between November 2009 and April 2012.
This voluntary recall had been initiated science yesterday for the inspection and installation of retention brackets on the curtain shield airbag inflators, as per the company statement. This recall explains that during a sudden impact the airbags would not inflate entirely and some parts of the inflators can be ejected with the airbags.

However, the Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) India made it clear that this is just a precautionary step to potentially defective airbags. A spokesperson from TKM said, “There are no reported failures of the affected part or any aggravations thereon in India till date. This voluntary recall campaign is being done by TKM in order to fulfill Toyota’s commitment to customer satisfaction.”
Besides hybrid Prius, the Japanese automaker is globally recalling the Prius Plug-in and the Lexus CT200h built between October 2008 and April 2012.
Apart from 1.43 million recall of possible defective airbag inflators, Toyota has also confirmed another recall of 2.87 million vehicles due to faulty fuel emission control.
