Tesla Opens Enormous Gigafactory to Satiate Battery Demand Worldwide

With the announcement being done two years back, the giant Tesla Gigafactory has finally come in front of media yesterday, while the grand opening ceremony is scheduled to take place this friday. This mega project has been developed from a colossal investment of $5 billion in the deserts of Sparks, Nevada. Built under the partnership with the Japanese firm, Panasonic Corp., the factory will satiate the global demands of lithium-ion batteries nearly double.

As per the Tesla CEO Elon Musk, this factory is just 14 percent build of the whole. Once completed, it will be around 10 million square feet in measure, or equivalent to the size of 262 NFL football fields. Going to be one of the largest buildings in the world, the Gigafactory will completely change the fortune of the Palo Alto, California based electric car company, Tesla. Estimates suggest, the large-scale production of lithium-ion batteries at this plant will not only cut their costs more than one-third by the coming 2018, but also offer employment to 10000 people in the coming three to four years.

Mr. Musk has ordered to complete the construction of the factory as soon as possible, due to its fourth electric car, Model 3, which is expected to roll out late next year. To satiate the growing demand for this upcoming Model 3 and other products by 2018, Tesla has decided to produce 5,00,000 units every year. Surprisingly, the California based automaker has received 325,000 bookings just after the unveiling of new Tesla Model 3 in March this year.

Another thing is the setup of powerwall business in a section of the factory from the shipped cells via Panasonic. Powerwall refers as a battery pack, which stores energy in your house and office either from solar panels or the grid supply, which can be used by the users as per their in house need or to charge their electric cars. To make this available soon for the customers, Tesla is contemplating over combining its Tesla and SolarCity soon.

Yesterday, at a media event, Elon Musk said that there should be more gigafactories in the coming future. The LA Times quoted, “It makes sense to have a gigafactory in Europe, one in China, one in India – wherever there is a huge demand for the product.” The quoted words might come true, as recently the Indian Minister of Road Transport & Highways and Shipping, Nitin Gadkari has visited the Tesla production plant, and offered company space for establishing the production unit at its choice of locations in the India. If Tesla set up factory in the country it will not only support the pollution free environment initiative but also offers electric cars and batteries for here and rest of the Asia.
